Maybe it’s the mysteries of oceans and lakes that cause us to be captivated by glimpses of the life that exists below the surface, or there is some elemental call of the seas that we respond to at a cellular level. Whatever it is, we are mesmerized and soothed by aquatic displays like fishtanks and aquariums.
If you decide to take the plunge and invest in a fishtank, there are some decisions to be made before setting out to find Nemo and bring him home.
Fish, like all pets, require food, water, light and the right surroundings and companions. First determine if you want a freshwater or saltwater tank. Experts recommend starting with a five-to 10-gallon tank, as it is simpler to maintain than a smaller tank and fish do better in them. The best thing to do is spend time, not money, first and go to a reputable store that sells fish and equipment. Acknowledged “fish geeks,” as they call themselves, are happy to help you through the first steps as you get your feet wet in the watery world of finny friends.
