What's Cool
Lighten up during dark winter days

During the cold, dark days of winter, we often spend more time indoors, eat and drink more, and sleep longer than we do the rest of the year. Some people, though, are affected more strongly than others by gloomy weather. This group suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a cyclic condition linked predominantly to the winter season. The causes, which may be genetic, involve fluctuations in brain functions that affect mood and circadian rhythms. .
Researchers have found that phototherapy, using light that mimics sunlight, relieves SAD symptoms. Any light source, but preferably daylight, at 10,000 lux (1000 foot-candles) aimed toward the eye for 30 minutes a day, can be effective. Light sources with a strong blue wavelength component are most effective. Any electric light bulb with a color temperature of 5000 kelvin or higher also meets this standard. A number of manufacturers offer bulbs, lamps and light boxes that can be easily used in home or office settings.
